Nantucket Summer Fabric Flying Geese Patchwork Quilt – Quilty Love Stash Buster Pattern
Today I’m excited to show you my Patchwork Flying Geese quilt, stitched up in the gorgeous Nantucket Summer Fabrics by Camille Roskelley for Moda Fabrics. This quilt pattern is part of my Quilty Love Stash Buster Series which is a set of quilt designs written specifically to help you sew through the fabrics you already have on hand.
One of the best things about this quilt is that you don’t need background yardage or additional fabric. Just pull a bundle of fat quarters from your stash, mix and match them, and you’re ready to sew!

About the Nantucket Summer Fabric Collection
This collections is a good one! Nantucket Summer is one of the few lines that Moda did a reprint on because it was so popular. Of course I had to grab a re-print in these gorgeous navy’s, blues and greens.
For this version of Patchwork Flying Geese, I used the low volumes as the “geese” (large square in pattern) and the darker prints as the “sky” (small squares in pattern). This did limit the size I could make since there were a certain number of low volumes. You can make the small throw that is show here using the bundle this way.
Or you make it all scrappy and make any size you want from the pattern. I really loved how that looked too! See below!

Patchwork Flying Geese Quilt Pattern
The Patchwork Flying Geese quilt pattern was one of the earlier designs in the stash buster series. It’s a simple yet striking layout built from flying geese blocks. I used the four-at-a-time method, which makes construction efficient and avoids fabric waste.
If you prefer extra accuracy, the pattern works beautifully with a flying geese ruler like the Wing Clipper. I often upsize the units slightly and then trim them down. It’s an easy way to get those crisp points.
Quilt Sizes Included in Pattern
This stash buster quilt pattern comes with instructions for lots of sizes, so you can make just the quilt you need:
- Baby
- Small throw
- Medium throw
- Large throw
- Twin
- Full
- Queen
- King
A True Stash Buster
Like the other quilts in the Stash Buster Series, Patchwork Flying Geese is designed around precuts – specifically fat quarters. Since so many quilters collect fat quarters, this makes the quilt super accessible.
Even if you have half yards or full yards instead, you can easily cut them down into fat quarters to make this quilt work.

Tips for Flying Geese Success
Flying geese can be tricky at first, especially when using the four-at-a-time method. Here are a few tips that helped me:
- Use a scant ¼” seam allowance. It gives you just enough wiggle room when pressing.
- Slightly oversize your squares. Adding ⅛” to the small squares and 1/4″ to the big squares and then trimming to size makes all the difference.
- Shift the small squares inward a few threads before sewing your diagonal seam.
- Consider rulers. Many quilters swear by tools like the Wing Clipper for trimming.
- Cut carefully. Accuracy from the start makes the process smoother.
The geese in this pattern are on the larger side, which makes them more forgiving and beginner-friendly. That’s why I’d call this an ambitious beginner quilt. It’s a great project for building skills without being overwhelming.

Fast and Addictive
Once you get into the rhythm of sewing flying geese, this quilt comes together quickly. It’s one of those “just one more block” kinds of projects, and I could easily imagine making it again with a different fabric bundle from my stash.
Quilting Details
For this quilt, I quilted it myself using the wavy stitch on my Janome MC6700p. It’s definitely my go-to for quilting. If you’re curious, I’ve shared a tutorial on how to use this stitch for quilting.
The Patchwork Flying Geese quilt pattern is a versatile, stash-friendly design that looks stunning in just about any fabric line. Whether you’re pulling from your scrap bins or cutting into a treasured fat quarter bundle like Nantucket Summer, it’s a quilt you’ll want to make more than once.
