Cozy Checkered Hearts – a new modern heart quilt
Today I have the brand new annual heart quilt to share. This year the heart quilt pattern is called Cozy Checkered Hearts. Cozy Checkered Hearts is a heart quilt pattern with a cozy, vintage-inspired feel. Classic heart blocks are paired with simple nine-patch blocks, creating a design that’s both charming and satisfying to sew.
This year marks the 8th year of this heart quilt tradition! It’s a quilt I enjoy working on each year and hope to continue for many years to come.

Cozy Checkered Hearts quilt pattern
I really love how this quilt came together. It started out with a different secondary block and I actually really liked it but my kids didn’t..ha. I had a few sketches I was working through and I kept asking everyone around me to pick their favorite.
They never picked this one (with the original secondary block). So I kept working on it and came up with the idea to use this cute little nine patches instead. I love when a pattern evolves into something that you suddenly get excited to sew up.
It worked out well to offer a few design options in the pattern.
The two quilts shown here are the coordinated rows with a color repeat and the scrappy layout.
Cozy Checkered Hearts – Coordinated rows with a color repeat
This first version is a large throw of the coordinated rows with a color repeat. I used six Art Gallery Pure Solids for the colors.

I used Art Gallery Pure Solids for these Cozy Checkered Hearts quilts. They are from the Geo Blooms Solids bundle.
This repeating rows version uses: Sweet Fig, Crystal Pink, Grapefruit, Georgia Peach, Olive Oil and Ocean. The accent is Morning Frost. And the background is Firefly Whisper by Art Gallery Fabrics.
The backing is Plaid of my Dreams by AGF.
Cozy Checkered Hearts also includes instructions for a pillow cover and a table runner.
Cozy Checkered Hearts – Scrappy Layout
This version below is the small throw size in the scrappy layout. The scrappy layout is probably the most stash friendly as you can use fat eighths, fat quarters or even your scrap stash for the heart blocks.
Art Gallery Pure Solids
The Art Gallery Pure solids used in this version are: Bewitched, Sweet Fig, Crystal Pink, Grapefruit, Georgia peach, Honey, Raw Gold, Olive Oil, Tender Green and Spruce. This is most of the Geo Blooms bundle. I used a fat quarter bundle here.
Accent is Ocean and background is Firefly Whisper again.
Machine quilting
This scrappy Cozy Checkered Hearts quilt was quilted up on my Janome MC6700p. I went with a one inch spaced grid pattern.
