Flying Quilt Pattern – A quick and easy flying geese quilt
Today I’m sharing this Flying quilt sewn up with these gorgeous blue/ green solids. This modern take on the classic flying geese quilt block is designed for ambitious beginners and experienced quilters alike. With bold flying geese rows and endless fabric possibilities, Flying is the kind of pattern you’ll come back to again and again.
The Flying quilt pattern is available in the Quilty Love pattern shop.

Art Gallery Solids in the Flying Quilt
I was pretty excited to buy one of these gorgeous solid bundles from Morgan Kelly Quilts. She did this bundle a couple of times and I couldn’t resist it the second time. It’s a beautiful mix of blues and greens. Colors are Balsam fir, Northern waters, Spruce, Ocean Fog, Pacific, Sprout, Fresh Sage and Rosemary. I think I left out Sprout and used 7 of the 8 colors.
I used a half yard bundle for this twin size quilt.
A Quick and Easy Flying Geese Quilt
The Flying quilt pattern comes together quickly with four at a time flying geese construction. Use this flying geese pattern to sew with your favorite new fabric collection, or mix solids for a modern look, or pull from your stash for a scrappy quilt (like this one).
- Use 1/4 yards – 7/8 yards depending on the quilt size
- Highlight your favorite fabric line
- Works with prints, solids, or a mix of both
No waste flying geese
Flying uses the four at time flying geese method. This is my favorite way to make flying geese because there is no waste. No extra cut off corners or anything like that. I prefer to upsize my geese a little using the instructions on the Wing Clipper Ruler. I highly recommend this ruler and can’t make flying geese without it now.

Four Quilt Sizes Included
Flying is a flexible pattern with four size options so you can make just the quilt you need:
- Crib size – perfect for baby gifts
- Throw size – a cozy lap quilt
- Twin size – great for beds or dorms
- Queen size – a striking bed quilt

Grid quilting with a domestic machine
I quilted up this huge twin size quilt on my Janome MC6700p. I switched it up a little and went with a grid pattern.
I have been determined to get better at pin basting and I’m thrilled that I’m starting to see some improvement! I used to struggle with it and used spray baste for all of my quilts. Well, I like the idea of using pins because it’s cheaper and I don’t need to add an extra substance to my quilts.
I also tried a new to me technique for this quilt. I only pin basted half of it! Then I (loosely) quilted that half. I believe I did 3 inch spaced lines. The final design was 1 inch spaced lines.

Once that first half was loosely quilted, I went back to my kitchen counter and pin basted the second half. This way I could smooth it all out nicely. It actually worked out really well!

The final design was a one inch grid. I really love the fresh and modern feel of it and plan to use this design again.
