Hexie Framed – A Modern Hexagon Quilt Sewn Up In Ooh Lucky Lucky Warp And Weft

Today I’m sharing this Ooh Lucky Lucky Warp and Weft Hexie Framed quilt! Hexie Framed is a modern hexagon quilt pattern and was actually the very first Quilty Love pattern. It’s sewn together using traditional piecing (no Y seams!).

This version of Hexie Framed is bold and blue in these Ooh Lucky Lucky fabrics and the Hue Crossweave background.

The Hexie Framed quilt pattern is available in the Quilty Love pattern shop.

Hexie Framed Quilt pattern

Hexie Framed is the very first quilt pattern I published over 10 years ago! It wasn’t easy to write..lol. It made all the ones that came after it feel like a piece of cake. Over the years, it’s been updated and improved.

There are two size hexie options in Hexie Framed. This one here is the original smaller size. It’s a little more tedious so it’s definitely a Netflix and quilt type of quilt. Or in my case… audio book and quilt type of quilt.

The larger hexie in the pattern goes together MUCH faster! The hexagons are bigger and there are less of them so if this one intimidates you then start with the larger size.

There is a video link included in the pattern if you get stuck on any step!

All traditional piecing

Hexie Framed is constructed with half hexies. This allows it to be pieced traditionally with all straight stitches. No Y seams like a full hexagon would require. I’ve actually never tried Y seams yet!

Hexie Framed is sewn together with angles kind of like a triangle quilt. They can take a little getting used to but once you get the hang it it, it’s no big deal. I wouldn’t call this one a beginner for that reason. However, my sister sewed it up as her very first quilt and it turned out great!

Use templates, a triangle ruler or a half hexagon ruler

The pattern comes with templates but I recommend a flat tipped 60 degree triangle ruler for best results. Or SewMarianna sent me her 4-in-1 hexie ruler to try out and this would work perfectly for the smaller hexie size. I’m excited to try it for the next one I make. Her ruler will notch out the corners which makes sewing angles SUPER DUPER easy.

I’m a big fan of the triangle ruler though because you can use it for all future half hexie projects and of course all future triangle projects.

Pre-cut and Scrappy friendly quilt

Hexie Framed is actually a really scrappy friendly quilt pattern. Somehow I haven’t made one from the scrap stash yet! It would be fun to make a rainbow fade version.

You can use jelly roll strips, fat eighths or fat quarters for hexie Framed. Or even smaller fabric cuts. You just need to cut half hexie sets from any assortment of fabric.

Ooh Lucky Lucky Warp and Weft by Ruby Star Society

For this version here I used a fat quarter bundle of the new Ooh Lucky Lucky Warp and Weft by Ruby Star Society.

This is a wovens fabric line so it’s nice and drapey. So like all wovens, I used a smaller stitch length to ensure it stays together in the long run. I did not pre-wash these fabrics but it would be a good idea to do that since they will shrink a bit.

The background is a Moda Hue Crossweave in Thunder. It’s a really really dark navy color.

So surprisingly, you can web or chain piece this quilt top together. You can find some webbing tutorials over on YouTube.

I webbed it in 3 sections to make it a little more manageable. This pattern also has nested seams! It doesn’t seem like they should work with angles but they do!

Long Arm Quilting

I sent this one off to Modern Textiles for long arm quilting. I was having a hard time deciding on the pantograph for the busy design. In the end I just went with a simple curve.

This pantograph is called Good Vibrations. I actually really like this one and have used it many times. It keeps your quilts modern and fresh and works on a lot of different quilts.

Plaid backing

The backing fabric on this Hexie Framed is from the Ooh Lucky Lucky fabric line. This entire quilt is warp and weft which makes it a soft and drapey and more light weight quilt.
