Happy Scallops quilt pattern

Today I’m sharing a brand new stash buster quilt pattern called Happy Scallops! Happy Scallops is the latest in the Quilty Love stash buster series.

Happy Scallops is a fast and fun strip pieced quilt that can use a large variety of fabric cuts including jelly roll strips, layer cake squares, fat quarters or even your scrap stash.

Happy Scallops quilt pattern

Happy Scallops is a stash buster quilt pattern! I’m always thrilled to add to the stash buster series because most of us quilters have plenty of fabric on hand just waiting to be used. I consider a pattern a stash buster when it’s easy enough to find fabric in your stash to start sewing.

So a stash buster can use a wide variety of fabric cuts and needs very little or no additional background fabric. Happy Scallops does use a little yardage for the border.

Fableism Canyon Springs Wovens

I used the upcoming Canyon Springs Wovens by Fableism for this version of Happy Scallops. Oh my, this line is gorgeous! It’s so full of amazing texture and the color combo is dreamy. Canyon Springs will be in quilt shops in May. I should have some bundles in the shop here when they come in.

I used a fat quarter bundle for this medium throw. The background of this Happy Scallops quilt is Fableism Everyday Chambray in Ether.

Quilting with wovens

Wovens can be a little more finicky to sew with than a regular quilting cotton. While all quilting cottons are technically a woven they are a little different than these. A regular quilting cotton has a tighter weave and the print or pattern is usually printed onto a solid fabric.

These Fableism wovens are dyed strands that are then woven to create the design. So any design you see has been woven into the fabric using various colors. They tend to be a little more of a looser weave which means they are more prone to fraying. They also tend to shrink quite a bit more when washed.

Pre-wash Wovens

Since they do tend to shrink quite a bit, I recommend pre-washing wovens. I don’t pre-wash regular quilting cottons but I do pre-wash these. So pre-wash to pre-shrink.

Keep in mind though that they will lose an inch or two so plan accordingly with your patterns. I needed a few extra fat quarters for this Happy Scallops since the fat quarters come out a little smaller after washing.

Use a smaller stitch length

One other thing I will do differently when using these wovens is to use a smaller stitch length like 1.8. Since they are more prone to fraying, using a smaller stitch length will help ensure the seams stay together in the long run.

Large Half circle quilting using a domestic machine

I tried a new (to me) quilting design on this Happy Scallops! It’s two large half circles that intersect in the middle of the quilt.

This was a fun design to try and fairly easy to quilt up. The trickiest part was marking a nice half circle and keeping the arc consistent. I started by marking one arc in the center of the quilt using a hera marker. I then used the walking foot guide to quilt the rest of the lines. My lines did start to get a little wonky.

I think if I try it again, I’ll start with a smaller arc at the top edge and work the lines towards the center. I think that could help keep them a little more even.
