A Hand Quilted Double the Plus Quilt

Today I’m sharing this hand quilted Double the Plus Quilt! Somehow this one slipped through the cracks and never made it up on the blog. I finished it up well over a year ago and then it promptly went into our quilt rotation instead of getting photographed and blogged. So we have been snuggling under this one quite a bit already.

Double the Plus Quilt Pattern

Double the Plus is an older classic Quilty Love pattern! This was just the second pattern I put out. The double sided feature makes it kind of fun and unique. Choose just two colors or two fabrics and create two quilt tops.

I think I’ve made this one three times and for some reason I have made every single one grey and white. I really want to branch out and try something else like a print or at least some color. Next time!

The Double the Plus quilt pattern includes instructions for a baby size up to king bed size. The throw size is shown here. It’s a pretty generous sized throw.

Beginner friendly quilt pattern

Double the Plus has simple piecing and even some strip piecing shortcuts. It’s a great beginner friendly quilt pattern.

The trickiest part will be lining up your two quilt tops when it comes time to baste it. I usually start by basting one side to my batting and then marking the outline of the quilt top so I know where to place the second side. It can take a little finagling but with patience it can line up pretty well. I’ll sometimes hold it up to a window too to see how well it’s lined up.

Fableism Sprout Wovens Plus Quilt

For this throw size version I used these gorgeous Fableism Sprout Wovens in Sugar and Pepper. These are a lighter weight woven with really beautiful subtle texture. If you have been following along then you know how much I love these wovens.

Sewing with wovens

They are a little more finicky than a regular quilting cotton through since they have a looser weave.

Whenever I sew with Fableism Wovens, I take these steps to ensure a securely sewn quilt:

  • I pre-wash to pre-shrink. These wovens shrink quite a bit so I pre-shrink them so there are no popped seams in the future quilt.
  • I use a smaller stitch length like 1.8. This tighter stitch will help hold these fabrics together.
  • I try to press my seams to the side. A side pressed seam is a little stronger in the long run than an open pressed seam.
  • I consider denser quilting to hold it all together.

All of this ensures that this quilt will be nice and secure for many many years of use.

Big Stitch Hand quilting

I can’t resist hand quilting these wovens quilts because they are so nice and soft and hand quilt up so beautifully. I enjoy working with them and even having the quilt on my lap as I quilt it.

For this plus quilt, I used a DMC Perle cotton in size 8 and did a bigger stitch. I went with a diamond pattern. This one was so enjoyable because it was just straight lines. Hand quilting straight lines is my preference since it’s easy mindless quilting and can go pretty fast.

Most of my hand quilting projects take about 6-8 weeks working on it in the evenings and weekends as time permits.

I really like the black contrasted thread on the white side of this plus quilt.
