Scrappy Quilty Trees quilt – a winter Christmas stash quilt

Today I’m sharing this scrappy Quilty Trees quilt! I started this one a year ago and just recently quilted it up using my favorite wavy stitch quilting technique. This one is stash friendly and super cozy with a flannel backing.

The Quilty Trees quilt pattern is available in the Quilty Love pattern shop.

The Quilty Trees quilt pattern came out quite a few years ago. It’s a nice stash friendly quilt as you can use fat eighths, fat quarters or even your fabric or scrap stash for it.

It’s a really nice and simple quilt using all straight piecing rather than half square triangles like a lot of Christmas tree quilts. That makes it a nice beginner friendly quilt pattern.

For this version of Quilty Trees I used an assortment of low volume fabrics for the block backgrounds. I really love the variation and added interest it brings. The pattern uses yardage for the background but it’s simple to switch out to a scrappy background like this.

I pulled some green fat quarters from my stash for the tree fabric. You don’t need many for this quilt! You can use as few as 7 fat quarters for the throw size. Use more for more variety in your trees if you prefer that.

The Quilty Trees quilt pattern includes the following quilt sizes:

  • Baby size quilt – 40″ x 55″
  • Throw size quilt – 60″ x 75″ (shown here)
  • Twin size bed quilt – 70″ x 95″
  • Queen/king size bed quilt – 100″ x 105″

Wavy Stitch quilting

I pieced this quilt top last November during the festive holiday season and then promptly tucked the quilt top away. It was a recent featured pattern in my weekly newsletter so it was a good excuse to pull it out and quilt it up.

I really enjoyed getting this quilt top done. I went with my favorite wavy stitch technique on it. Also, have I mentioned on here that I’ve been pin basting lately!? I’ve always wanted to get better at pin basting since it’s cheaper and you don’t add any adhesive to the quilt. I still haven’t perfected the pin basting but they are turning out pretty good for the most part.

I always like to do every few lines edge to edge and then go back and fill in. I started with 2 inch spaced lines and thought about calling it done. But I was afraid I would regret that so I did go back through and add 1 inch spaced lines.

The wavy stitch gives quilts such nice texture and it kind of hides some of that pulled fabric. As I said already, I certainly haven’t perfected pin basting yet.

Quilt tags

No quilt is complete without some cute tags. I’ve become a big fan of tags on quilts. They are a little like a quilt accessory. A fun little surprise. My custom logo tags are from Dutch Labels. The cute snowflake tag is by Lolly Tags.

Quilty Trees backing + binding

I finished this quilt off with a cozy flannel backing and a gingham binding. The flannel is a Robert Kaufman grid flannel. And the binding is a Robert Kaufman gingham.
